It could be on the grounds that individuals straightforwardly member spray painting with posses and their regions, it is viewed as crafted by punks and hoodlums. Spray painting is really an imaginative type of articulation for adolescents. Letting your imagination stream doesn’t imply that you’re a crook or a hooligan. An online article seconds this: â€Å"The spray painting is their method of communicating what they believe is craftsmanship and what workmanship may mean and speak to them. This workmanship assists individuals with communicating what their identity is and what they feel craftsmanship ought to resemble and isn't that what workmanship is all about† (Graffiti positive or negative?). ‘Bombing’ is one of the most well known styles of spray painting craftsmanship. It very well may be portraye d as a type of workmanship in which an individual reviews on canvas or a divider in their own one of a kind style with hues and extravagant lettering (Graffiti positive or negative?). We for the most part observe instances of shelling, as ornamental composition on dividers with various letter developments and a blast of shading and innovativeness. It is utilized to compose for entertainment only, to jab fun or to offer a striking expression against an inappropriate doings in the public eye. Individuals regularly find such craftsmanship charming and value its uniqueness, and yet it is likewise observed as a statement of savagery. Thus the blended perspectives banter over the lawfulness of such workmanship. These specialists ought to be furnished with a stage to communicate their own selves and be perceived for their abilities as opposed to being indicted and placed into prison. For what reason don't we have workmanship exhibition halls for road craftsmanship? In current occasions, th ere is no meaning of what workmanship is. There are no limitations or cutoff points to how workmanship can be spoken to. Portrayals and articulations of advanced craftsmanship know no limits. An online article seconds this when it says, â€Å"Art can be made into anything; it tends to be made into various structures that both interest and invigorate our faculties however who really chooses what craftsmanship is? As per Bomb, It the narrative by Jon Reiss, the possibility of spray painting workmanship sprung from the adolescent propensity for composing your name at whatever point you had a pen in your grasp or for this situation, a jar of shower paint. Road specialists love to leave their blemish on the dividers, and they do that by composing th eir names, false names or epithets in a wide range of styles and hues on the dividers. â€Å"Bomb it† the narrative additionally investigates the underlying foundations of spray painting craftsmanship and follows it back to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This recommendation that spray painting workmanship has crude roots isâ reallyâ veryâ interesting and a fairly feasible hypothesis thinking about the idea of cavern drawings. In the narrative Bomb It, we perceive how one road craftsman asserts that the general public has given them the

Take a Load Off

Take a Load Off Remember when I said that were human after all? Thats still true. And its still true of everyone who wants to get in to MIT. And I talked about humanity as a perk; that is, the admissions office has high, albeit reasonable expectations of its applicants. Chris Peterson put it nicely when he said you dont have to build, say, a nuclear reactor to get in. But part of being human means acknowledging some limitations. For example, this bears no resemblance to snow: Gratuitous picture. Yes, this is visible from my awesome double. As much as I wouldve liked for it to snow today, it didnt. In December. If you live in the northeast, thats kind of a big deal. To illustrate that, I invite you to go to Google and type blizzard of without quotations itll automatically suggest blizzard of 1978 boston. Also, Ohio. But I guess Googles search suggestions are biased?More to the point of that pressing topic on some of your minds: OH MY GOD AHHHH ADMISSIONS DECISIONS?! Well, no, not yettheres a panel of hard-working, air-breathing, and food-eating humans still at work on that. Nevertheless, and quite understandably, you want to know whether youre in. Right now. But thats not good for you, let alone productive. The best thing you can do is take the weight of waiting off your shoulders. Take a load off. Its advice that you may have been told already, but it bears repeating, because its good advice and its true. That said, it doesnt sound very helpful, or even convincing, but I have to write about this anyway, because its advice that I wish I had taken earlier. So Ill try two approaches to make the point: one of them involves Einstein, but the other and the first angle Ill try is to tell my own story of how unnecessary all that stress can be. Back when I was applying to colleges when I was a good deal more lazy than I am now I only felt like sending one application ahead of the regular decisions deadlines; I chose to apply to MIT EA. As soon as I had sent the last required document away, it was as if the admissions office had just made me eat a really terrible burrito against my will (or something), because from then on, something grew in my stomach and tied it up in excruciating little knots. Anticipation. Dread. A pang of regret for having been so eager, as if I were hastening the arrival of utter disappointment, or worse still, raising the possibility that the agonizing wait would last almost twice as long. Despite the high hopes I had and the stars that were in my eyes, I counted every possible point against me: a 690 on the math section of the SATs, a mere 710 on the SAT II Bio test (why werent these all 800s?!), a lack of research experience, a lack of non-academic lab experience, a lack of incredibly strong connections. A lack of sustained, truly Nobel laureate-caliber genius. My therapy called for large doses of optimism. So I focused on what I had going for me: sincere interest in the classes I took, at competitive levels; a few constructive things I had done to keep myself occupied in the summer, though it was nothing mind-blowing. But ultimately, all that made me think about was getting my decision even faster. With credentials like those, I thought, the worst that could happen is Ill get deferred, right? But I wasnt sure. Up until that very last night, I kept countdowns going, I kept playing out little scenarios in my head about ways to react, or how my friends would react in each of the three outcomes, and I kept comparing myself to past applicants who posted their success stories on College Confidential, that woebegone breeding ground for needless anxiety, because my flipping topsy-turvy stomach wouldnt settle back on solid ground if I tried anything else. Well, I did go shopping for gifts for my schools holiday drive, but there was a point that night when I just wanted the right things to jump into my shopping cart, presumably so I could resume my regular pattern of waiting in abject terror. My point: though I tried my hardest to get MIT Decision Day 2010 to come faster, I couldnt. Heck, it was just a coincidence that MIT decided to release the results minutes earlier than their projected Well have them at 8 PM tonight statement. And while this particular story has a happy ending, thats not the point. Sure, enduring fitful nights of sleep and the agonizingly slow advance of time, all just to see MITs decision, makes for a dramatic story, but it doesnt make you an altogether sane person for that time, or an altogether happy one. Again, I understand the pressure and the gut-wrenching anticipation. Ive been there. Its entirely natural. But you know what else should come naturally? Doing the things you love to pass the time; its advice thats been handed down from these blogs before, and I wish I had listened then. Because theres nothing more unnatural than trying to rip a hole in the space-time continuum just to see how you fared this admissions cycle. As far as science currently knows, its also impossible. If someone whos been through this whole process isnt a good enough authority on the issue, let me quote Einstein the Einstein who even used these words in an abstract for one of his papers: When a man sits with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute. But let him sit on a hot stove for a minute and its longer than any hour. Thats relativity. So please, if you find yourself sitting on a stove, do yourself a favor and jump off of it.

The World Is Flat- the Globalization World in the Twenty...

Introduction to International Business Assignment Title: Individual Assignment – Book Review Book title: The World Is Flat- the Globalization World in the Twenty First Century Author: Thomas L. Friedman Introduction ‘The World Is Flat- the Globalization World in the Twenty First Century’ is a well written book by Thomas L. Friedman based on his personal experience, case studies, and etc. He explores the political and technological changes that have made the world a smaller place. From the explosion of the internet to the dot com bubble bust and outsourcing of jobs to India and China, globalization has evened the playing field for many emerging economies. Prominent in Friedmans thesis are the effect of relocating outsourcing jobs†¦show more content†¦Friedman then goes on to the â€Å"the triple convergence,† or the way the ten flatteners converged to formed an even flatter global playing field. The first convergence include how the ten flatteners came together in a way that allowed many of the them to work together, to form multiple types of collaborations. The second convergence is the set of business practices and skills that make the most of the flatteners, thus enhancing every potential. The third convergence is the entrance of three billion plus people (India, China, Russia- mainly) onto the playing field which added new brain power and enhanced ‘horizontal’ collaboration across the globe. Analysis Friedman goes on to his second part of the book, â€Å"America and the Flat World,† he states that America isn’t and shouldn’t be afraid of this flattening. Free trade is still in their best interest, as long as there are demands, people are required to produce them. He points out that China and India are only racing Americans to the top, thus only promoting higher standards for everyone. From the book, we learn as services and goods become more tradable, more jobs are likely to become outsourced/digitized/automated. He predicts that untouchable jobs in the new flat world will be firstly, the people who are â€Å"special or specialized† as in, Celebrities, Doctors Judges etc. Secondly, the people who areShow MoreRelatedHistory of Globallization5628 Words   |  23 PagesHistory of Globalization Estle Harlan Harlan Business Consultants Tim Rahschulte, Ph.D., Professor George Fox University Abstract The historical context of globalization covers centuries. Digital Life †How Technology Has Changed Us Free Essays

Digital Life Every day people are hit constantly by a bombardment of online media. It used to be that people would see billboards, TV commercials and magazine, but with advancement of technology people remain wired into the internet 24/7. â€Å"Smartphones† are a great example of a device that promotes constant connections. We will write a custom essay sample on Digital Life – How Technology Has Changed Us or any similar topic only for you Order Now It enables people to be connected to online media at all times. The effects that this constant connection has had on people in general are life changing. We can certainly agree that the lives of everyone who has access to these connections will change over time. The primary change that is happening in everyone’s life is the way we communicate with each other. Just 10 years ago cellphones were starting to become more and more popular. They evolved from big briefcase sized machines to something that can easily fit in your pocket. Even then though, calling someone was the primary way of communicating over distances. That has changed and is no longer the case. With advancements in Email, texting and social networking, they have all moved to a more popular position than making calls. Whether people need to relay small pieces of information or have a long conversation, texting and emails tend to be what they use. While this may not seem like a big deal to most people, one can argue that it is making the people that use this form of communication over calling or face to face interaction become stumped at interacting with people and sometimes have trouble communicating face to face at all. An interesting issue connected to this is that as a result of real life communications not being a primary skill, some people resort to purely online relationships. Particularly online gamers who play games like World of Warcraft or other Massive Multi-player Online games. These relationships range from simple friendships to as far as marriages which take part online entirely, but sometimes turns into something in the physical world. There have actually been many cases of people who met playing games online, then decided to meet in real life and ended up getting married. While the presence of online dating has been around for a while with sites like eHarmony, these sites still primarily run on face to face interactions and people have an idea of the interests and likes of the people they attempt to form relationships with. In the worlds of online gaming, one can argue that even though it is formed by two people, it is to a great extent mostly anonymous. On eHarmony you know what the other person looks like while in online games, you only know who the other person wants to look like. The person someone falls for online can be the exact opposite of what the other person believed they were getting into. All of this stems from the fact that some people who become to accustomed to the online world and online media turn out to have severe communication issues in the real world that causes them to turn to the people they interact with online. Increasing the rate of socially inept people is not the only effect that the internet is having. Due to the massive daily usage of Social Networking websites people take part of everyday, a problem with narcissism is arising. The problem with this is that if people have problems with things like self image, they resort to these networks. Facebook promotes negative parts of the personality directly linked to disruptive forms of narcissism, which was promoted by a study done by Christopher Carpenter. The study stated that among other aspects that are promoted by online social networking, â€Å"a sense of deserving respect and a willingness to manipulate and take advantage of others† is highly promoted. Pearse 1) It is thus clear that there is various social problems that arise from online media, not just social ineptitude. While the previous drawbacks of the connected world were looking at the social sense, something occurs in the person that hurts their sense of being alone. Since people are constantly on their internet enabled devices, they lose a sense of the things around them. They forget about the beauty of nature, among other things. Since humans by nature seek companionship, they make the lif e altering choice to remain connected at all times. In doing so one loses the knowledge of the beauty of being alone outside. Like Sherry Turkle said on a radio interview â€Å"If you don’t know how to be alone, you’ll only always know how to be lonely. If you’re always reaching for the device, the cell, the Facebook, the sharing, you lose that. † (Tippet 1) What she is trying to say is that because of our fear of loneliness, we remain connected to online media all the time thus losing our ability to embrace being alone and absorbing the wonders around you. Another huge change it has in our life is in the cognitive sense. When people need to know a bit of information they used to go to the library or find it in the newspaper among other sources. Over time it got to the point where it was as simple as â€Å"googling† for it. Currently it has gotten to the point where people rely on a small number of sources for information. The biggest one being â€Å"Wikipedia. org,† which is a free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit and is maintained by other people. While there used to be a process that makes you think and search for information through stacks of books and articles, today it is not as interactive as it was then. The result is a slump in many habits like studying and similar queries of knowledge and the increase in bad habits like laziness and reliability in sloppy sources. An undeniably great change that happens to people with constant online media is in the way they think. This relates to the changes in how people hunt information as well. Advertisement is probably the biggest part of online media. It is what fuels it as of the online world is funded through advertisement. While there is undoubtedly good products still in production today, it is not uncommon to see bad or unreliable products become successful. The reason for this is that people are bombarded by online advertisements so much more often now that they assume a product is the best if it has a huge advertising campaign. The more a product advertises, the more people it reaches and sells to. Thanks to companies like Google and Facebook, it has become easy for any company to reach millions of consumers ready to give their money away. Most consumers have the idea that they need to buy things to make them happy or more complete. This is implanted in them by the massive amounts of online media they face everyday. One of the issues with this is that many consumers do not bother to do research on products they buy. They simply buy them because they are popular or because they have been advertised heavily. The same way that people have gotten lazy at hunting down information and learning, they have also become susceptible to having their ideas and thoughts molded by big business advertisements. The presence of technology and online media can definitely make some people forget they are human, but only to an extent. If we connect some of the negatives the online world has brought along as it developed, we can see that some human qualities are lost as well, or at least weakened. Curiosity is one of the parts of humanity that is waned thanks to the internet. Due to information being readily available at the click of a mouse, the human desire to learn has lessened in many people. While they still go to school and get degrees, most people no longer absorb information around them or that available to them in libraries, for example. People don’t take in stories and knowledge and hold them dear simply because if they are ever needed, they can be instantaneously looked up or downloaded. Another way that the internet can help people forget they are human is by allowing them to become anyone they want to be. This is a by large the main reason people play video games. Online games allow people to become anyone they would ever want to be from a warrior to a hero. There is nothing to stop them from achieving what they want online except time, and so very much time goes into achieving their online goals. People become so immersed into their online persona that they completely forget about their real life responsibilities among other things they ignore. Not only do some people build marriages and friendships online, but in doing allow their online personas to become their main one. Their online lives become more important than their physical lives. It is undeniable that humans are now evolving alongside technology. The further that technology evolves, the easier it is for humans to stay wired into the internet. People can now be connected at all times so of course it will have an effect on how humans evolve. I believe humans will instinctively always know that they are only human. However this will have an effect in that more people will turn to the internet and online media to direct their lives, since many people believe others will know how to do things better, and seek out that wisdom online, but we run into a big issue here. We can already see how online media is making people multitask badly and how it severely decreases focus amongst many. Nicholas Carr speaks of a subject called Neuroplasticity which talks about how our brain is constantly changing and evolving. Due to online media, it is being trained to â€Å"take in information very, very quickly in a very interrupted, distracted way little bits of it come at us all the time. â€Å"(Carr 1) Therefore we are actually evolving in such a way that we are gradually losing focus. One can argue that over time, with the growth of online media, focus is the main skill that may be lost almost entirely. Nicholas Carr states in an Interview on PBS News Hour that the because the internet serves distractions at all times of the day, that our focus is the target of it. What we’re losing is the ability to pay deep attention to one thing over a prolonged period of time. † (Carr 2) We are evolving away from deep thought, because information is so readily available, and it presents itself to us in in the form of hundreds of small distractions every day. With online media constantly distracting people with Facebook and Twitters, some researchers wondered what life would be like for a person th at would be abruptly disconnected from this constant link to the web. A group of scientists decided to put this to the test on themselves. The scientists were all shocked at what happened on the third day of their experiment. Richtel, a journalist who followed the scientists on a vacation, stated that â€Å"You start to feel more relaxed. Maybe you sleep a little better. Maybe you don’t reach for your phone pinging in your pocket. † (Digital 1) After just three days of being disconnected, the sense of extreme urgency that was causing the scientists to sleep less and constantly check their phone had faded away to a certain degree. It was obvious there, that there is something positive in disconnecting even if you do it just for a small amount of time. In conclusion, online media will constantly try to take our attention off other things, and this trend shows absolutely no sign of stopping. It has undeniable effects on peoples social lives as well as their minds and how they think. As was stated by people like Carr and Carpenter, it is not a good direction in which things are evolving. While these problems are constantly growing, very few things are being done to stop them and even fewer are successful. As long as this trend continues, the chance for people to turn it around and begin using their brains as they were used before gets lower with time. It is up to the people what powers they give to online media, but trends point to them gaining more steam. The choice to disconnect is completely in the hands of the user, but users will most likely stay online. Today, the charity benefits 170 children’s hospitals and helps children in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The Children’s Miracle Network is an organization that is desperately needed by millions of children every year. Over 14 millions children are helped annually by this charity, a reflection of just how many children and families have to deal with the hundreds of different illnesses and ailments that threaten the happiness and the lives of children throughout North America. The sad fact is that there are even more children out there who do not receive the help of the Children’s Miracle Network because there are so many in need. This leads to how it is that we as a workplace can help. As we all know, each of us has a different strength and different interests, but each of us also feels the draw to help others who need us to reach out and give them a helping hand. In this case, the children an d families dealing with diseases of the body are in need of someone to reach out and make sure that they are getting the best possible care that they can receive to make their recovery speedy, and to help find cures to make sure that they can go on and live a prosperous, happy life. The Children’s Miracle Network knows that businesses and offices are constantly looking for a way to create cameraderie amongst co-workers and searching for a cause that they can all unite behind. The Children’s Miracle Network is such a cause and with our help it can continue to develop it’s programs and expand its affiliation to more hospitals around Canada and beyond. The Children’s Miracle Network is excited about involving workplaces in the fund-raising process. Workplaces around the country have sponsored benefits for the charity to help their employees rally behind a common cause and to become more attached to the community around them. From golf tournaments to galas and dinners, to individual events, co-workers get together and raise money for this worthy cause. Each of us could use our own strengths and interests to create a different event or help one event be more successful. We could rally the community support around us and make sure that children throughout the nation are receiving the help that they need during the most trying times in their lives. The beauty of this charity is that we are not limited to one single means of helping: we can do anything and use any of our strengths to bring in support for a worthy cause. What is special about the Children’s Miracle Network is that it helps many children overcome severe medical challenges. Unlike some organizations, their support is not limited to a select handful of hospitals, nor does it focus solely on one more common medical condition. Regardless of what medical problem a child is dealing with, or what hospital they go to (as long as it is one of the hundreds of affiliated hospitals) each child is given the same help to overcome their challenges. Many of these children who do triumph and get better become ambassadors for the Children’s Miracle Network and Wal-Mart’s throughout Canada will honor them. Any child, with any illness or physical ailment, is given the help that he needs and deserves. The most important thing for anyone who is fortunate enough to have good health, good friends, and a happy life to do is to give back, and every business desperately needs to give back to the community. To this end, our support of the Children’s Miracle Network is very much needed to help others, to ensure that every child who has to deal with a terrible illness, regardless of their race, ethnicity, class, gender or, most importantly, their financial means can have access to quality healthcare, given by healthcare professionals and doctors that truly care about these children, and making sure the families can focus on helping their children get better as opposed to how they are going to get their child access to the care that they need. Each of us must look deep within ourselves and find that part of us that can connect with these children, a sure motivation for us to reach out and help them. If we had a child in our life in need of the Children’s Miracle Network we would depend on the assistance that they give to get through the hard times. The Children’s Miracle Network is not just a cardboard cut-out that we buy in the grocery store line and put our name on. We have to become a member of the team and join together to help save a child.

Chapter 1

Chapter 1: I feel bad that Aunt Martha doesnt ever get her money back. She worked so hard for so many years to earn that money to buy her childrens freedom and now shell have to start all over again. It is very demeaning to Linda for her to work for her dead mistresses daughter who is 5 years old. That is less than half her age.Chapter 2: Its a good thing that William, Lindas brother got to live with her. It must have been good to have family around. I think thats so mean when Dr. Flint sells Aunt Martha, she was supposed to get her freedom when her mistress died. Linda has already lost so many people. Her mother, her friend, and suddenly, her father too.Chapter 3: This chapter is a display of the hardships that the slaves faced, especially on the day that they would be sold off to different families. Also, slaves that had been in a family for years would just be sold off at any price, small or large.Chapter 4: I think Benjamin was a very brave person, and Im happy he escaped to New York.Chapter 5: I think that Linda and Dr. Flint have a disgusting relationship and I think that Dr. Flint is a mean, cruel man. The story of the two sisters is really sad because it shows that skin color was very important back then. The color of the sisters skin determined their life style. When Dr. Flint realizes that Linda wont give in to his sexual demands, he makes her his daughters nurse, which is bad because then Linda has to sleep wherever the daughter sleeps, and when Dr. Flint moves his daughter into his room, Linda ha to sleep there and that makes Linda uncomfortable, which is what Dr. Flint wants.Chapter 6: When Mrs. Flint recognizes what is going on between Linda and Dr. Flint she becomes angry and makes Linda sleep in a room that is connected to her own. Hydrosphere, Biosphere & Lithosphere Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Hydrosphere, Biosphere & Lithosphere - Essay Example Explain the relationship between the saturated zone, the water table, a ground water well and the cone of depression, all within the sub-surface. In the hydrological cycle, the water circulates between the oceans, the atmosphere and the continents. The water can exist in any of the three states during the transportation, i.e. as vapor expressed as humidity, as liquid in the form of droplets or as solid such as in the form of ice crystals or snowflakes. During the various process involved in the hydrological cycle, the quantity of water or 'water balance' that changes between inflow and outflow can be estimated based on the principle of conservation of mass. The movement of the water including the formation of water vapor is driven mainly by solar energy although other forces are also involved. The water evaporates from the surface of the ocean during the vapor phase. It then usually either falls as rain onto the surface of the earth (liquid phase) or as snowfall (solid phase) under t he process of precipitation, and on land a large portion of it usually flows in rivulets and rivers from the mountain tops to the seas in liquid form under the influence of gravity (surface runoff). Some of the water reaching land surfaces is also absorbed by the soil (infiltration) which can then follow one of several paths such as directly to the atmosphere by plants through transpiration. Within the sub-surface, a 'saturated zone' develops near the water table which is the surface that separates this zone from the zone of aeration (Monroe et al., 2006: 524). The saturated zone develops from the capillary rise of water in the pores of the soil, sediments and rocks. When a water well is used to pump the groundwater, the lowering of the water table in the area of the well can create a 'cone of depression', which refers to the loss of water having exceeded its inflow. 2.The food chain is a valuable concept in biogeography. Give an example of a specific food chain, labeling the variou s levels of the food chain. After looking at characteristics of food chains, explain how a geographer’s approach to the study of organisms might be different than biologist’s study of organisms; what would each try to emphasize more than the other? What exactly is a biome? Compare/contrast the concept of the biome with that of the zoogeographic region. Compare/contrast the floral characteristics of 2 of the following biomes: Desert, Tundra, Midlatitude Grassland and Boreal Forest. An example of a simple three-step specific food chain is given below with the deer as the herbivore and the lion as the carnivore. Food chains indicate a unidirectional transfer of energy beginning with the producers (as autotrophs) and ending with the topmost carnivores. Knowing the food chains help in identifying the interactions and interdependence between living organisms. The distributions of the energies and biomasses in each food chain are typically though not always pyramidal. In real ity, many food chains have at least four steps and several are intricately linked forming food webs. Grass (producer) > Deer (herbivore) > Lion (carnivore) In studying the characteristics of food chains, a geographer would be more interested in the wider ecosystems; in how the components of the chain are interdependent, in the flow of energy through the whole system between the different trophic levels, in examining the levels of biomass, and so on. A biome is a natural ecological grouping of animals and plants on the basis of climates, i.e. â€Å"all the ecosystems taken together in a given geographical area having the same type of climate† (Bharatdwaj, 2006: 100). Other environmental factors could also differentiate biomes but they are

Police science College Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Police science College - Essay Example 42). Police discretion has been further addressed and defined at the highest levels of the American criminal justice system. The United States Supreme Court, the ultimate arbiter of the reasonableness of police procedure, has sanctioned the use of police discretion in 4th Amendment search and seizure cases. Indeed, "There are many other intrusive activities that the Court leaves solely to the discretion of the police on the grounds that the individual has no "reasonable expectation of privacy" in the place or premises targeted by the police" (Maclin, 1996: np). In short, even from a constitutional point of view, there are situations when the use of police discretion is not only allowed, but necessary. Police discretion, therefore, can best be characterized as the use of judgment in fluid situations and settings. O'Connor presents a four-part framework for defining police discretion for a particular community: (1) discretion as judgment, (2) discretion as choice, (3) discretion as discernment, and (4) discretion as license (2005, np.). A police officer's judgment, for example, ought to be based on his experience, his particular area of expertise, and his insight into different situations as defined by that community. ... Discretion is therefore highly individualistic. Discretion one community might be exercised differently than in a different community. Choice means trying to find alternative solutions to problems. This aspect of discretion involves a weighing of the costs and the benefits of alternative courses of action. Discernment refers to an examination of the underlying merits of a situation. The police officer must use discretion, for instance to determine whether someone is being scapegoated or unfairly accused. Perhaps there is some excuse that, while not legally recognized as a defense, nevertheless is a very reasonable reason for employing discretion. Finally, the notion of discretion as license reflects the fact that there are times when it might be wiser to disobey standard operating procedures and rules. This is an area where the possibility for the abuse of discretion is the highest. In short, discretion is a multifaceted concept and it tends to be applied on an individualistic basis. Question 3: What is it about YOUNG PEOPLE AND THE POLICE Why is there so much conflict and animosity It has been established that police discretion exists, that police discretion is defined in various ways, and that there are many inaccuracies or myths surrounding the application of police discretion. The sources of police discretion regarding young people, however, are more definitely categorized and defined. O'Connor, citing the extensive research summaries presented by Gaines et al, breaks the causes of police discretion down into three main categories. The first category focuses on the age and the history of the offender and deals mostly with age-related factors. Does the offender, for example resist or respond

Discursive essay on abortion Essay

Abortion is an issue that people have been questioning for generations. It is often a very hard personal decision to make; you must consider all sides of the issue. Abortion is the removal of a foetus before it has been born. Some call this murder; others say it is a matter of personal rights. Here I will explore all the arguments for abortion, leaving you to make this decision for yourself. Many women have abortions for many different reasons. Some because they feel they are too young, they do not want to have a child, or because they were raped. They may feel a child will restrict their ability to live their lives to the fullest at a younger age or simply because they cannot afford one. There are many reasons that a woman may choose to terminate her pregnancy each different from the next. She might not want to be a single parent, she doesn’t want to marry her partner, he can’t or won’t marry, or she isn’t in a relationship. She might not want anyone to know she has had sex or is pregnant due to family reasons or embarrassment. Or the most logical reason- she or the foetus has a health problem. Abortion ends a pregnancy before birth takes place. When an embryo or foetus dies in the womb and is expelled by the body, it is called a spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) and is natural and unpreventable. To end pregnancy voluntarily, is an induced a bortion. When a foetus is dead at birth, it is called a stillbirth. More than 90% of all abortions are performed during the first three months of pregnancy. In fact, more than half are performed within the first two months. These abortions are usually performed at a hospital or abortion clinic, and the women go home an hour or so later. Abortion in the last three months of pregnancy is extremely rare but still do take place. Only about 1 out of 10,000 abortions take place after 24 weeks. These are the most complicated and are performed only when the pregnancy seriously threatens a woman’s health or life or when the foetus is severely deformed. Most women who have abortions are under 25 years old and unmarried. Divorced women and women with financial difficulties are more likely to choose abortion than any other women. Nearly one-third are in school. After abortion most women will feel a brief sadness or other negative feeling but recover very quickly. These problems, if prolonged, are often called â€Å"post-abortion syndrome†. Abortion is a very grave sin in the Catholic Church unless the woman’s life is in danger. The fifth commandment states † thou shall not kill.† Catholics have said: ‘Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end, no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being.’ And ‘Do not slay the innocent and the righteous.’ The deliberate murder of an innocent person is gravely wrong to the dignity of the human being, to the golden rule and to the Creator, say the Catholic Church. Pro-life groups say that abortion is deliberate murder, even though the foetus is unborn. They believe that as the foetus is living, it has rights and therefore abortion qualifies as a killing. They say that if the woman did not want to have a child, she should not have had unprotected sex and so it is her own fault and she must bear the brunt of it. If your mother had decided to abort, you would not be here now. But pro-choice groups say that just because the woman got pregnant by mistake or without realising the consequences does not mean that she should give birth to a child that she is unready or unwilling for. This applies most profoundly in the case of teenage pregnancies, as 1/3 of women choosing to have abortion are still in school. They say that having a child could drastic decrease the woman’s quality of life, especially if she is financially insecure. In the year 2000, 1.3 million abortions took place. If it was made illegal, the world’s population would be increasing at an even higher rate than it is now. Many people also say that since the foetus is incapable of self-conscious thought it is not yet a person, and so the rights given to people do not apply to it. Another pro-choice argument is that legalizing abortions has eliminated many illegal abortions performed by unskilled practitioners under unsanitary conditions. These abortions often caused death and permanent reproductive  injuries. Abortion on demand also prevents unwanted births, possibly lowering infant and child abuse and neglect rates.

Long-Form Possessive Adjectives in Spanish

Possessive adjectives in Spanish, like those of English, are a way of indicating who owns or is in possession of something. Their use is straightforward, although they, like other adjectives, must match the nouns they modify in both number (singular or plural) and gender. Using the Long Form Unlike English, Spanish has two forms of possessive adjectives, a short form that is used before nouns, and a long form that is used after nouns. Here we focus on the long-form possessive adjectives with examples of usage and possible translations of each example: mà o, mà a, mà os, mà as — my, of mine — Son libros mà os. (They are my books. They are books of mine.)tuyo, tuya, tuyos, tuyas — your (singular familiar), of yours — Prefiero la casa tuya. (I prefer your house. I prefer the house of yours.) These forms are used even in areas where vos is common, such as Argentina and parts of Central America.suyo, suya, suyos, suyas — your (singular or plural formal), its, his, her, their, of yours, of his, of hers, of theirs — Voy a la oficina suya. (I am going to his/her/your/their office. I am going to the office of his/hers/yours/theirs.)nuestro, nuestra, nuestros, nuestras — our, of ours — Es un coche nuestro. (It is our car. It is a car of ours.)vuestro, vuestra, vuestros, vuestras — your (plural familiar), of yours —  ¿Dà ³nde està ¡n los hijos vuestros? (Where are your children? Where are the children of yours?) As you may have noticed, the short form and long forms of nuestro and vuestro and related pronouns are identical. They differ only as to whether they are used before or after the noun. Owner Irrelevant in Determining Gender In terms of number and gender, changed forms are with the nouns they modify, not with the person(s) who own or possess the object. Thus, a masculine object uses a masculine modifier regardless of whether it is owned by a male or female. Es un amigo tuyo. (He is a friend of yours.)Es una amiga tuya. (She is a friend of yours.)Son unos amigos tuyos. (They are some friends of yours.)Son unas amigas tuyas. (They are some friends of yours.) If youve already studied possessive pronouns, you may have noticed that they are identical with the possessive adjectives listed above. In fact, some grammarians consider the possessive adjectives to be a type of pronoun. Regional Variations in Use of Possessive Adjectives Suyo and the related forms (such as suyas) tend to be used in opposite ways in Spain and Latin America: In Spain, unless the context is clear otherwise, speakers tend to assume that suyo refers to possession by someone other than the person spoken to — in other words, suyo tends to function as a third-person adjective. If you need to refer to something possessed by the person spoken to, you can use de usted or de ustedes. In Latin America, on the other hand, speakers assume that suyo refers to something possessed by the person spoken to. If you need to refer to something possessed by a third party, you can use de à ©l (of his), de ella (of hers), or de ellos/ellas (of theirs). Also, in Latin America nuestro (and related forms such as nuestras) coming after a noun is uncommon for saying of ours. It is more common to use de nosotros or de nosotras. Long or Short Possessive Adjectives? Generally, there is no significant difference in meaning between the long and short forms possessive adjectives. Most often, youd use the long form as the equivalent of of mine, of yours, etc., in English. The short form is more common, and in some cases, the long form can be somewhat awkward or have a slight literary flavor. One use of the long form is in short questions:  ¿Es tuyo? (Is it yours?) In these simple questions, the form of the possessive depends on the gender of the unstated noun. For example,  ¿Es tuyo? could mean Is it your car? because coche (the word for car) is masculine, while  ¿Son tuyas? might mean Are they your flowers? because flor (the word for flower) is feminine. Key Takeaways Spanish has two types of possessive adjectives: short-form possessives, which go before the noun they refer to, and long-form possessives, which go afterward. There is no difference in meaning between the two forms of possessives, although the short term is used more often.Suyo is often understood differently in Spain than it is in Latin America.

Short Story - 1452 Words

Harry cracked open one eye as he heard the bathroom door creak open. There was a brief paused before the door slammed shut. Harry sighed and sat up. He shook his head slightly shaking the water droplets off before he slid the glass door open and peeked out of the shower. Louis stood in the middle of the bathroom holding a fuzzy white towel. He wore only a pair of shorts. Harry frowned. It was morning, Louis knew that Harry took his baths in the morning. He would usually take a short bath then go and shower. â€Å"Im in the shower Louis.† Harry sighed. He tucked his head back in the shower and sunk back in the bath. There was a soft patter against the tile floor. Harry groaned and peeked out again. This time Louis had gotten closer. He pressed the back of his hand against Louis’s forehead feeling the temperature. Louis groaned and shook his head making Harry love his hand away. â€Å"My head hurts.† Louis sighed. â€Å"Thats what happens when you drink.† Harry chuckled slightly. Louis shrugged and slumped down pressing himself against the alpha. â€Å"Do ya’ still like me?† Louis asked. Harry shot back a confused look. â€Å"Cause I drank, it’s bad.† Harry sighed and pulled Louis up so he could see the boys eyes better. He began to understand what Louis probably meant. Sterling must have drank in the past and Louis figured it was bad since Sterling did it. Harry sighed and shook his head. â€Å"It’s not bad if it’s in moderation, you just drank too much. Just a glass or two is fine.† Louis nodded happily and laid back down on Harrys warm chest. He wrapped one arm around the alphas broad shoulders to hold himself up. The boy was still for a moment before Harry felt something prick against his neck. He froze then began to smile to himself.
